
THINGS TO DO IN ENGELBERG
Engelberg is a picturesque mountain village located in the Swiss canton of Obwalden, nestled in the heart of the Swiss Alps. At an elevation of around 1,000 meters (3,280 feet), Engelberg is a popular destination for both summer and winter tourism.
Engelberg is renowned for its ski resorts, especially the Titlis Glacier, which offers skiing and snowboarding opportunities at high altitudes, ensuring long seasons of excellent snow. The area is also known for its off-piste skiing and freeride routes, attracting adventure enthusiasts. In addition to skiing, winter visitors can enjoy snowshoeing, tobogganing, and cross-country skiing.

Engelberg is also home to Engelberg Abbey, a Benedictine monastery founded in 1120, which remains an important cultural and historical site. The abbey is known for its stunning baroque architecture and houses an impressive library and cheese factory, where traditional Swiss cheese is still made.
Winter Activities
Downhill Skiing
Ski in the Titlis, Jochpass and Brunni region on blue, red and black slopes at between 1000 and 3000 meters above sea level on 82 km of ski runs is serviced by 24 lifts.
Titlis and Jochpass
Titlis is a fantastic ski region offering spectacular views and superb runs for every level of skier. On the longest run (from Titlis to Engelberg), a difference in altitude of over 2000 metres is attained in 12 km.
Brunni offers a sunny, clearly laid out ski region that is ideal for beginners, families and groups.
If you would like to rent equipment, there are are several specialist sport shops in Engelberg.
Freeride-Hazards
Areas outside the marked and prepared ski runs are considered “free” snow sport terrain. These areas are neither signposted, inspected nor secured against alpine dangers. Information on the current snow, weather and avalanche situation is available at the avalanche bulletin and at the tourist office.
Cross Country Skiing
Engelberg offers 25 km of cross-country ski runs on the valley floor, 10 km between Gerschnialp and Untertrübsee plus a 1.5 km long floodlit night track by the ski jumping hill.
Winter Hiking
Engelberg has a network of winter hiking trails of approx. 49 km in length. The starting point for all routes is the Engelberg railway station in the center of the village.
Engelberg’s snowshoe trails are an absolute must for those who wish to experience the pure white landscape in all its glory. The tourist office can help you with questions regarding equipment and organize guided tours.
Sledging
- Brunni sledge run (2.5 km from Brunnihütte to Ristis)
- Gerschnialp sledge run (3.5 km from Gerschnialp to Engelberg), night sledging on Wednesdays
- Fürenalp sledge run/winter hiking trail (1.2 km)
The sledges can be hired at the valley stations.
Sporting Park
Sporting Park Engelberg is the place to go for curling and ice stock sport. During the winter months, it also offers an outdoor ice rink.
